Soft surrealness by Hsiao-Ron Chen
We are enjoying the soft and inviting paintings of Taipei-based artist Hsiao-Ron Chen. The surreal paintings feature children, plants and animals with weird deformities in just as strange and imaginative environments. Hsiao-Ron works with pencils, oils, mixed media, and digital art.
The Fairy Ballet Carnival
And many more Destructions played
In this ghastly masquerade,
All disguised, even to the eyes,
Like bishops, lawyers, peers, or spies.
Last came Anarchy; he rode
On a white horse, splashed with blood;
He was pale even to the lips,
Like Death in the Apocalypse.

“The designs [above] are from the workshop of Daniel Rabel (1578-1637), the artist responsible for creating costumes for the spectacular entertainments performed by and for the French court. The ballets were based on the social dances of the day, but this was social dance elevated to an elaborate art form which combined choreography with poetry, music, song and pageanty, and included elements of satire and burlesque.”

The Octopus at Home
“Here is the octopus in its habitat, the ocean. I have tried to capture the ocean in lines: its restless movement, the ebb and flow of its tides, the waves that billow and fall over each other, and its sheer depth. So my lines stream in different directions, curving, circling and reaching out.”
The Lobster’s Secret
“To express its inner being, its secret core, I painted the lobster using a maze of lines, patterns and colour. When I was done, I realized that there is no limit to what art can do.”
Old Friends
“The tortoise and the frog are favourite icons of Mithila art. I have painted them in the river habitat, which is scattered with tufts of earth. [..] My frog and tortoise are resting on these tiny islands. I think they are having a conversation.”

Best of 2011 (from my archive)
So if you cut my brain opens it looks just like this (lie). Think I stared at some of these pics so long that looking at them again is like re-reading journal entries. Favourites -just from my side that is - posts of 2011. Odd boot placement but very necessary.Hope ya’ll see what I see!

back to the drawing board…
“The Dormouse fell asleep instantly, and neither of the
others took the least notice of her going, though she
looked back once or twice, half hoping that they would
call after her: the last time she saw them, they were
trying to put the Dormouse into the teapot.”

So remember that post last week when I said I’d like to do ”an art a day”?
Ahahaha! (wipes tear of laughter)
Kind of forgot Dormouse’s paw too…
